Dr Dhanabir Laishram and Ito Tongbram, advisor and president of AMUCO, have highlighted the need for bringing peace and harmony and stressed upon the need for the people of the North East to forge a united stand and democratically struggle for bringing development in the region during a national seminar at New Delhi on November 6.The seminar organized by the North East Forum was held under the theme, 'Dialogue and Conflict Resolution in the North East's Search for a Civil Society Initiation'.
A seminar paper entitled 'Conflicts and Civil Responses in North Eastern India: Problems and Perspectives of Manipur' was jointly presented by Ito Tongbram and Dhanabir Laishram.
Addressing media persons today, the two said that eminent personalities of India and North East region including former Prime Minister Chandrasekhar, K Padmanabhiah, PA Sangma, Tarun Gogoi, Roy Burman and Sanjoy Hazarika among others attended the seminar.
The AMUCO leaders said former Prime Minister Chandrasekhar justified the feeling of angst and neglect pervading amongst the people of NE as the region has for long been neglected by the authority concerned.
Padmanabhiah told the seminar that the Centre's concern is to solve the decades long NSCN (IM) problem and not to sow any seeds of discord amongst the people of the North East region, further informed the AMUCO leaders.
The Centre's interlocutor also said that he did not expect a movement of such a magnitude in Manipur that led the death of a number of persons during the anti-ceasefire agitation.
Prof N Sanajaoba, Dean of Law, attended as an expert on North East, also presented a paper on 'Conflict Resolution in the NE'.
MU Professor N Joykumar presented a seminar paper dealing with the post 1949 political status of Manipur.
